Wigtown head for high-flyers

Newton Stewart have the opportunity this Saturday to close the gap at the top of the league table in their match against Heston Rovers.

As this is the only South of Scotland League match being played with the other teams all playing in the first round of the league cup.

Heston have struggled of late to reach their own previous high standards but have now had a recent change in management which will mean the players trying to impress.

They are always formidable opponents but Newton Stewart will be keen to maintain their unbeaten run and to make up ground at the top with this being one of their games in hand so this should be an exciting and entertaining contest.

There are some intriguing matches scheduled to be played in the South of Scotland League Cup first round with the top match looking like being at Moffat where the high flying Upper Annandale play hosts to Wigtown and Bladnoch. This match could well go close but the experience of the visitors may just be enough to see the Trammondford Park side progress to round two.

Nithsdale Wanderers and Mid-Annandale lock horns for the second successive week with the home side winning by the odd goa in five last time around in a league match. This contest could again well go close and could well take more than the regulation ninety minutes to find a winner.

St Cuthbert Wanderers have Abbey Vale as their visitors to St Marys Park, Kirkcudbright for a match the home side should win if they take their chances in front of goal although Vale are much stronger opponents as they were last season and could well push Saints all the way.

Lochar Thistle will be strong favourites to progress going into their match against Dumfries YMCA who they beat by ten goals to nil in a recent league match.

Fleet Star have Crichton as their visitors to Garries Park for a match that could go either way. This contest looks very close and is another that could well take more than 90 minutes to find a winner.

Creetown travel to Hamilton to play Edusport Academy with the home side starting the match as favourites to progress.
