Weather plays havoc with south fixtures

All of the matches last weekend were in the South of Scotland league competition with two of them being scheduled to be played on Friday evening.

Only one of them survived though when the match due to be played at Blairmount Park between Newton Stewart and St Cuthbert Wanderers had to be called off because of the atrocious weather conditions that had resulted in the pitch becoming waterlogged.

However the other match at Lockerbie did go ahead with the local derby between Lochmaben and Mid Annandale resulting in a 4-1 victory for Mids. Terrible weather conditions did not deter the players from both teams turning in a good performance and in the first minute Shane Watson put Lochmaben into the lead but a close in effort from Mids prolific scorer Nathan Muir levelled the match to send the two teams in at the break all square. Five minutes after the restart Muir found the net to put Mids into the lead and a Dean Smith double in the 71st and 77th minutes ensured Mids the three points to keep them in second place in the league table.

On Saturday Abbey vale beat Creetown 5-2 at New Abbey with Brodie Turner and Dan Thom both scoring doubles to add to a single from Clarke Chambers as the home side went nap. Heston Rovers and Threave Rovers fought out a no score draw at Palmerston park while the match at Moffat where league leaders Wigtown and bladnoch were due to play upper Annandale was called postponed. At Maxwelltown high school Lochar thistle went down by the odd goal in five in their match against Edusport academy. The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute with Ryan Coates finding an equaliser within seven minutes. However the visitors went ahead again to give them a slender half time lead with an own goal after the restart levelling the match once again. Lochars Derek McKnight scored the winner with a header but unfortunately it was into his own net to give Edu the three points from a hard fought match. In the final match played Dumfries YMCA’s woes continued when they were well beaten again by Nithsdale wanderers in an 8-1 rout at Sanquhar.
