There was no doubt where the biggest match of the day in the South of Scotland League was being played on Saturday.

Third-placed Newton Stewart entertained leaders St Cuthbert Wanderers at Blairmount Park and, as it turned out, this was the only match played with the wet weather claiming the other three scheduled games.

In a hard-fought contest, the Creesiders claimed the three points in a 2-0 victory which put them into top place in the league above Saints.

In a highly competitive encounter with some very good football on display from both sides, Newton Stewart took the lead after 16 minutes play when Alistair Fisher fired home from close in following a mix-up in the Saints defence.

The home side held their slight advantage into the break although they had to be defensively sound to keep the Saints forwards at bay.

Saints went all out to find an equaliser after the restart but found the Newton defence standing strong on several occasions.

With 15 minutes left to play, Fisher struck again to fire home goal number two to take the points and the plaudits and to head the league table for the first time in recent years.

Although others below them have games in hand, it could be a tight finish to the league competition this season.
