Two behind for Stewartry

Stewartry 7pts Lenzie 9pts

The top match of the day in RBS west division two lived up to its top billing with a hard fought game at Greenlaw. By the end third placed Lenzie had squeezed past second placed Stewartry with a narrow 9-7 victory. Both teams went for an early score as the game swung back and forward between the two 22s. A penalty in front of the posts gave Lenzie the early lead in only seven minutes. Stewartry lost another penalty award in twelve minutes to open up a six point lead. Stewartry turned the pressure on and from a lineout well won by Liam Henderson and Danny Burton gave Ian Fenwick the chance of a score but he was held up over the line. Lenzie continued to be dangerous on the break and another penalty kick which was missed in the seventeenth minute. Twenty minutes into the game the Stewartry scrum started to take command turning the Lenzie pack to win the put in. With the pressure on tries were dissallowed for John Muir and Ian McMorran while the Blacks continued to attack the line for a further four minutes before Lenzie cleared their lines. Five minutes from half time Lenzie added a third penalty to go nine points clear. Two minutes from half time Stewartry won a line out five metres out and captain Ian Fenwick was driven over by the Blacks pack. Cammy Fenwick added the conversion. Half time Stewartry 7pts Lenzie 9pts.

The second half was a hard fought game with both teams defences cancelling each other out and possession being given away too easily from some basic mistakes. Paul Swalwell and prop Tommy Cannon made inroads to the Lenzie 22 before John Muir was stopped five metres out before Lenzie cleared the danger. With twelve minutes to go Stewartry were reduced to fourteen men when replacement second row Stevie Hogg was red carded for a dangerous tackle. The extra man allowed Lenzie to run down the clock never having looked like they would cross the Blacks line for a score and with a final penalty kick away over the sheds to finish the game and a narrow 9-7 win to the visitors and second place behind Annan.
