Newton Stewart Tri club may only have been formed two years ago, but two club members are heading off to Austria next weekend to represent their country.

David Beattie (Newton Stewart) and Ian Hannah (Stranraer) have qualified to represent Ireland and GB respectively at Challenge Walchsee on Sunday 4th September in the European Championships.

This is a middle distance triathlon, with a 1.5 mile open water swim, 56 mile bike ride before finishing off with a half marathon.

Ian is an experienced International triathlete and former Wigtown sports personality of the year.

He will be competing for one of the top places. For David, however, this will be a whole new experience.

He said: “I watched Ian race in London three years ago for Great Britain, and was absolutely inspired by his performance.

“I have spent the past three years trying to improve enough to qualify myself. I managed to gain a qualification place at an event in Northern Ireland last year, and will be trying hard not to embarrass myself amongst Europe’s top amateur triathletes!”

If you are keen to try triathlon, Ian and David are both actively involved in coaching at the club.

There are regular bike, run and swim sessions; look up the club at www.nstri.co.uk or on Facebook. There is an aquathlon (swim/run) event organised on Saturday 17th September - see Facebook for details.

All levels of ability welcome!
