Haig Gordon Cup final
Dalbeattie Star v Threave Rovers
South of Scotland League
Creetown v Nithsdale Wanderers
Stranraer v St Cuthbert Wanderers
The Haig Gordon Cup final to be played on Saturday is the last competition of the season to be decided.
And it sees the South’s top two teams over the present season – Dalbeattie Star and Threave Rovers – going head to head at Islecroft Stadium.
Star have had the edge over their Stewartry rivals this season by winning the South of Scotland League but there is very little to choose between the sides and this contest could go either way.
Between them they have scored well over 200 goals in the league and have a similar goals against record. And both have prolific goal-scorers in their ranks with Andrew Donely at Threave scoring more than 50 times, while Star’s Scott Milligan can boast of scoring in excess of 60 this season.
The final two league matches of the season are scheduled to be played with bottom placed Creetown hosting Nithsdale Wanderers. The home side have a good opportunity to finish the season with a victory which would only be their third of the season, having beaten Abbey Vale and Newton Stewart in recent weeks. Nithsdale have not been at their best of late and, although they will still pose a threat to the Castle Cary side, it is not beyond Creetown to take the three points.
St Cuthbert Wanderers play their final match of the season when they travel to Stair Park to take on Stranraer in what could be the home side’s last game in South football as the club are reported as withdrawing from the league to concentrate on under-19 football within the Scottish framework. The young Stranraer side will be keen to finish the season on a high but Saints on form are a formidable outfit so a close match is expected.
