CREEBRIDGE show their skill in Exclusive Security Cup to take win from Market Inn.

The Exclusive Security Cup final, sponsored by the Unicorn Restaurant in Newton Stewart, was played for between Creebridge House Hotel and Market Inn on Friday 27 May.

Creebridge House Hotel 4-1 Market Inn

The first cup final of the season was played out at Dalbeattie in blustery conditions more akin to a night in November rather than May. Creebridge triumphed, in the end running out comfortable winners by four goals to one which, but for some poor finishing and brave goalkeeping, could have been even more emphatic.

It was the Market that took the initiative early on and took the lead in the 8th min following a corner from the left hand side. Iain Sneddon rising above the Creebridge defence to bullet home a header to give the Market an early lead. Three mins later and Creebridge could’ve equalised when a through ball found Hughes, but the ‘keeper was quick off his line to close him down and he saw his shot drift wide. In the 18th min Creebridge again went close and again it was Hughes with a half chance. Market almost doubled their lead on 22 but the final cross failed to beat the ‘keeper when Hodgson was lurking behind. Creebridge’s Hughes was again causing problems for Market’s defence as he flashed a header over the bar from a corner. Creebridge were really starting to turn the screw towards the end of the first half, which was proving a bit too much for Market as they were being pushed deeper into their own half. The equaliser duly came on 33 mins from Robert Middleton who scored following a corner from the left. 2 min later Creebridge felt they should’ve had a penalty but their claims were waved away by ref Tony Davis. Hodgson nearly had a chance for Market on 38 when the keeper spilled the ball from his challenge. The half ended with Creebridge on the front foot. Half time Creebridge 1-1 Market.

Into the second half and it was Market who again got out the traps quickest and created the first chance in 47. Fine work on the left wing from Kev Rzepecki and Hodgson set up Burgess for a half chance. Middleton then hit the post in 51 before getting his second of the game in 54 when he was put through; he showed great composure as he took the ball round the keeper to slide into the net. Hughes again went close for Creebridge but must’ve left his shooting boots at home as his shot was easily saved. Market had the ball in the net in 70 mins when Robison turned the ball in but the assistant referee put his flag up a tad late to indicate offside much to the annoyance of the Castle Douglas side. In the 75th min Creebridge all but sealed the win when Robert Middleton lobbed the keeper for his hat trick. Whyte added a fourth on 85 and the cup was heading to Newton Stewart. Full time Creebridge 4-1 Market.

The League were happy to announce that the Scottish Amateur Football Association President Graeme Harkness was on hand to make the presentation of trophies. Also in attendance were S.A.F.A. Secretary Hugh Knapp, his wife Mary and Chairman of the S.A.F.A. International Committee Bob Lamberton.

Scorers: Creebridge (Middleton x 3, Whyte) Market (Sneddon)
