Stewartry go down at home to Cambuslang

Stewartry Rugby Club took on Cambuslang in the preliminary round of the BT Sheild at Greenlaw but went down by 28 points to 45.

The home side kicked off and were soon on the back foot when they went offside on their own 22. Taking a quick tap penalty Cambuslang ran through to score under the posts. The easy conversion gave them a seven point lead with only three minutes on the clock.

In the tenth minute the Blacks made ground into the visitors 22 from a series of pick up and drives. Cambuslang gave away a penalty for offside and Mosey took the points. The restart kick didn’t go 10 metres giving Stewartry a scrum on the halfway line. The Blacks attacked with Wallace kicking the ball over the Cambuslang defenders but their full back was on hand to clear the ball back down field.

With 17 minutes gone Stewartry went down to 14 men when one was yellow carded for an intentional knock on. At a scrum on the halfway line Cambuslang took the ball against the head. Sending it out wide to their left winger he touched down. The conversion missed.

Stewartry got a scrum on the Cambuslang 22. Picking up at the back Thomson passed the ball out to the Stewartry backs. Running at speed McCarney jinked past a couple of defenders before passing back inside to let Wallace go in for a try. Mosey’s conversion cut the points difference to two. Again the restart didn’t go the 10 metres giving another halfway line scrum. Securing the ball Stewartry kicked for touch. Taking a clean catch at the lineout the ball went to Amos who drove over the Cambuslang line but the ball was held up. In the five metre scrum Stewartry kept up the pressure but the visitors got a turnover and the Blacks were penalised for offside allowing Cambuslang to clear their lines.

With eight minutes remaining in the first period the visiting side got a penalty on their own 10 metre line. Taking the heal the ball went wide and their winger ran onto it at speed. He ran through weak Stewartry defence to score an unconverted try. From the restart the home team went offside again on their own 10 metre line. The visitors took a quick tap kick and mounted an attack on the Stewartry line but they were stopped. Thomson left the field replaced by Cammy Fenwick. Just before the break Cambuslang were offside inside their 22 allowing Mosey to slot another three points taking the half time score to Stewartry 13 Cambuslang 17.

Going into the second period Ian Fenwick replaced Alistair McMorran. It started the same way as the first half. Going straight into attack Cambuslang ran through the Stewartry defence and up the right wing to get another converted try in the third minute. Amos took a knock and was replaced by Middleton. With 25 minutes remaining Henderson went on in place of Porteous and Amos returned to substitute Ian McMorrin.

Into the last quarter Alistair McMorran replaced Smith. The home side got a penalty on the Cambuslang 10 metre line and made good ground deep inside the visitors 22 but they knocked on. At the scrum Cambuslang took the ball and made it back to half way. With a scrum just inside Stewartry territory the Blacks took the ball against the head. Sending it wide to McCarney he dodged past 2 defenders to touch down. The conversion fell short.

Ten minutes from time Cambuslang managed a turnover at a ruck in the midfield in Stewartry territory. Weak Blacks defence allowed the visitors through to score under the posts. The conversion went between the uprights. Two minutes later Cambuslang secured the ball from the restart. Moving at speed up the right wing they went over for another converted try. With six minutes left and another restart the visiting side punished Stewartry by doing the same again. In a lineout on the Stewartry 10 metre line they got good possession and started to attack. Putting the ball out wide McMahon went in to score an unconverted try.

In the closing play the home side got a penalty when Cambuslang held on to the ball in a ruck inside their own 22. Taking a quick tap kick McCarney took the ball and charged up the left wing to touch down. The conversion was short. Final score Stewartry 28 Cambuslang 45.
