Newton Stewart Junior Golf member, Maria Cowan is heading for Spain, after qualifying in the Daily Express Junior European Open.

Maria was nominated by Newton Stewart Golf Club’s Junior Convenor to one of the National Qualifying Finals Competition held at Sandyhills Golf Club, Glasgow on August 8.

The competition, first staged in 1994, has seen some of the country’s best junior golfers compete. Superstars Luke Donald and Justin Rose all have competed in the past.

Maria’s determination and skill recorded a 10 over par round, to lead the girl qualifiers and become one of fifteen girl qualifiers in Great Britain and now has the opportunity to compete in Spain at the end of November. Apart from flights, the prize sponsored by the Daily Express includes accommodation for the family; four qualifying rounds and the chance to play in the finals at Finca Cortesin, recent venue for the Volvo World Match Play Championships.

Maria will now be focused over the next few months and will have the benefit of the new practice facilities at Newton Stewart Golf Club, which have been funded from a successful Awards For All Grant.
