THE 2011 sailing season is now in full swing throughout Dumfries and Galloway and an exciting new development is about to be unveiled.

The South West Scotland Sailing Association is about to take on the mantle of Sailing Development Group for the region. As a development group, links with the Royal Yachting Association will be strengthened opening up opportunities for sailors, windsurfers and powerboaters.

The Sailing Development Group will be officially launched at Newton Stewart on May, 19th, shortly before the major event of the season, the Rosebowl Regatta, which will be hosted by Wigtown Bay Sailing Club at Isle of Whithorn, over the weekend May, 21st and 22nd.

The 2010 Rosebowl Regatta was the highlight of a strong season of sailing in the south west, hosted by Solway Yacht Club at Kippford last May. Twenty two boats enjoyed perfect sailing conditions on the Urr estuary on day one but were challenged by a strong northerly blast on day two.

John Beardon of Annandale teamed up with Flora Stewart of Solway in a 420, they particularly enjoyed the blowy Sunday and won three of the four races to finish first overall. As well as the prestigious individual Rosebowl, they took the individual junior trophy and helped Annandale Sailing Club, based in Lochmaben, win both overall and junior team competitions.

Along with the Rosebowl, SWSSA organised another two competitions to create a circuit of events known as the Grand Prix. Carol Beattie and Jill Dobbie of Annandale SC had by the far best combined scores over the events and won the Grand Prix for the second successive year.

The race for second was very close with three boats on equal points, but it was RS 200 sailors Elaine Ross and Fiona McCulloch of Solway that came out second when the tie was broken. Chris Mitchell & Ian Murgatroyd of Annandale were third in their Hornet and Solway’s Caitlin Ross was fourth in her Laser Radial. Becky Allan of Annandale in a Laser 4.7 finished a commendable fifth in her debut season on the circuit.

The 2011 Grand Prix features four events. In addition to the forthcoming Rosebowl, there will be a Regatta at Solway YC on June, 4th and 5th. Loch Ryan SC near Stranraer host their event on July, 2nd and 3rd. The series concludes at Annandale SC on September, 10th & 11th. Competitors must sail three of the four events to qualify.
