South sides are up for the cup

The Potts Cup competition commences this Saturday with some intriguing ties in prospect.

Creetown will not be relishing their match against Heston Rovers for the second week in succession following their 6-0 defeat last week.

Although things are very different in cup ties than league matches, Heston will go into this match as strong favourites to progress.

The two clubs who have left the South of Scotland League to play in the new Lowland League, Dalbeattie Star and Threave Rovers, are taking part in this particular competition.

The Dalbeattie side travel to play Fleet Star at Garries Park and are expected to progress, while Threave could find Lochar Thistle a tough hurdle to overcome on their home park, though the Castle Douglas side should make it through to the second round.

Newton Stewart have had to give up home advantage and travel to New Abbey to play Abbey Vale in a match that the Creesiders will start as slight favourites. However, matches between these two sides are historically very close and although Vale have not had the best of starts to the season they will still pose a threat, particularly on their own ground.

The Creesiders, however, seem to have found the way to goal following their 7-1 victory over Fleet Star last week and will hope to continue this form at New Abbey.

There are also two South of Scotland League matches scheduled to be played, with league leaders Wigtown and Bladnoch travelling to Sanquhar to play Nithsdale Wanderers. Nithsdale are a tough nut to crack on their own ground and the visitors may well have to be at their best to take the three points in a contest that is a potential banana skin. The Trammondford Park side, though, will start as favourites to keep their 100 per cent on track.

Crichton play Mid-Annandale at Hospital Park with the home side looking the likelier to take the three points, although a share of the points is a possibility.
