Results from Monday 22nd April’s Haig Gordon Cup - Semi-final.
Wigtown and Bladnoch 2 Newton Stewart 1
Cree Lodge Cup – Round 2
St Cuthbert Wanderers 6 Crichton 2
As expected, the Haig Gordon Cup semi-final match at Trammondford on Monday evening lived up to the high expectations when these two local rivals play each other. Richard Jones gave the home side a first half lead when he ran onto a through ball to fire into the net. In the second half a loose ball fell kindly for Newton Stewart central defender Lewis Richardson to level the match. As the contest progressed towards a penalty shoot-out, Wigtown were awarded a free kick about 20 yards out which was taken by Jones and his fierce shot gave keeper Harry Fidler no chance and ensured the home side made the final which will be played at Meadow Park, Castle Douglas against St Cuthbert Wanderers on Saturday 4 May.
The Cree Lodge Cup second round match at St Mary’s Park was not so evenly matched though, with St Cuthbert Wanderers running out comfortable winners by six goals to two. Ally Barnes put the home side ahead after 26 minutes’ play with Ryan McKie adding another four minutes later. Barnes added his second and his side’s third four minutes after the interval with Craig Rudd finding the net two minutes later. Rudd scored again in the 71st minute with Russell Thompson breaking Crichton’s duck with 15 minutes left to play and although the visitors scored again in the 78th minute through Mark Leighfield, Rudd completed his hat-trick in the final minute of the match.
