South of Scotland League

Newton Stewart 1 Stranraer 1

Threave Rovers will play either Crichton or Stranraer in the final of this seaso’ns Potts Cup Final following their narrow three goals to two victory over Dalbeattie Star at Islecroft on Monday night. A 20-yard shot from Jamie Struthers in the 25th minute put the Castle Douglas side ahead against their local rivals but their was no more scoring until the 58th minute when Danny Dunglinson doubled the score from eight yards following a great solo run.

Two minutes later Scott Milligan pulled a goal back for Star from twelve yards out but in the 74th minute Star failed to clear a corner and Andy Donely pounced to score goal number three for the visitors.

In the 85th minute substitute goalkeeper Graham Wright was red carded from the bench for something said to an Assistant and two minutes from time Star gave themselves a fighting chance of taking something from the tie when Roman Soltys met a Hugh Cameron cross for Stars second goal but it was too late to salvage the match and Threave progress to the Final.

In the only match played in the South of Scotland League, Wigtownshire rivals Newton Stewart and Stranraer served up a tremendous match at Blairmount Park which ended all square at one goal each.

Newton had the ball in the net as early as the 13th minute but it was struck off for offside.

Three minutes later Andrew Fisher pressurised the visitors’ defence which resulted in keeper McCauley having to head a pass back over the bar to safety.

Chances fell to Newton’s McEwan, Gary Smith and Jason Gallacher which were squandered as the Newton defence did very well to keep a fairly experienced Stranraer side at bay on the occasions that there fast football found them in the danger area but surprisingly the first half ended goal-less.

It only took the visitors five minutes into the second half to take the lead when the experienced Danny Mitchell turned a low cross in at keeper Leiths near post but Newton kept on fighting hard and were rewarded when skipper Johnny Fisher scored a wonder strike from the edge of the box to win a well earned point for his side.
