The match of the day last Friday was at Blairmount Park where Newton Stewart played hosts to the present South of Scotland League champions Wigtown and Bladnoch for what turned out to be an enthralling and exciting match with the goals and points shared. After a fairly even start to the game, Newton Stewart broke the deadlock through Ryan McKie whose swerving shot went in off the upright in the twenty-eighth minute. The home side’s joy was short-lived however when a defensive mix-up a minute later allowed Blair Dougan a tap in from ten yards to square the match. Four minutes from the break Newton took the lead again when McKie’s cross-field pass found the head of an unmarked Martyn Henry to give them a one goal advantage that they took into the break. With thirteen minutes left to play, Wigtown central defender Scott Forrester levelled the match again when he finished from a free kick on the right to end the scoring and give his side a share of the points.

This result leaves Newton Stewart five points ahead of their local rivals with both teams having played the same number of matches.

League leaders Lochar Thistle dropped three points when they were beaten by the odd goal in five at Palmerston Park by Heston Rovers. Lochar ended the match with only nine men after Kieran Kreuse and keeper Darren Martin were both red carded. Jonathon Boyd opened the scoring for the home side after twelve minutes play with Sean Kevan adding a double in the second half. Ross Hunter scored for Lochar in the sixty-fifth minute and although an own goal by Stewart Douglas gave the visitors a fighting chance of taking something from the match, Heston held on to take the three points. Abbey Vale are enjoying one of their best seasons for some time and last Friday they beat Crichton by three goals to two with both sides finishing the match with ten men after Steven Cooper for Vale and Russell Thomson of Crichton had been red carded. Chris Mellon gave Vale the lead in the thirty-fifth minute with Darren Stevenson and Colin Carnochan adding a goal each to cancel out the two scored by the home side.

Creetown recorded another great victory when they travelled to St Mary’s Park to play St Cuthbert Wanderers and returned home the victors by five goals to four and, by all accounts, should have scored even more goals. Striker Roman Soltys put the home side ahead in the sixth minute from the penalty spot but Micky Sutherland levelled the match eleven minutes later. Youngster James Hilton put the visitors ahead in the twenty-third minute but two minutes later Soltys squared the match. With thirty-three minutes played, David Hunter restored Creetown’s lead with Soltys recording his hat-trick in the thirty-fifth minute. Five minutes before the break, Sutherland scored to send the teams in for the half-time break with Creetown holding a one goal advantage. Hilton put the visitors two goals ahead five minutes after the re-start and when Philip Middlemass scored in the sixty-ninth minute, Saints looked to be right back in the match but Creetown held on to record a well deserved victory. Edusport Academy went nap against Upper Annandale at Hamilton as they eased to yet another three points.
