’Shire’s 1st XV travelled to Bothwell Castle to face Uddingston on Saturday with a team depleted through injury.
This in no way detracted from the effort and determination shown by the local players facing opposition they came up against three times last season. As was expected, it was a very tight affair with neither side gaining any major advantage.
The referee on the day applied the letter of the laws strictly and numerous mistakes by both sides resulted in the power of the forwards being called into action for scrums on many occasions. The ’Shire’s pack got the better of these exchanges early on and, with 20 minutes played, slick passing by the backs resulted in stand-off Andy Farquhar delivering a clean pass to outside centre John McIntosh. The defence’s attention being drawn to inside centre Neil Warwick, McIntosh crashed through belated covering tackles to cross the line for the first score. Captain Farquhar stepped up and added the extra points with the conversion.
