Rugby clubs return to action

Local rugby clubs are back in action on Saturday after a free weekend because of the autumn international series.

Newton Stewart face something of a daunting task as they make an away trip to Glasgow Accies in RBS West Division 1. When the two last met, on September 7 at Bladnoch Park, the visitors ran out winners by 25 points to 12.

Home advantage in Glasgow this time will mean Accies start as strong favourites to do the double over the Reds, though Newton are well capable of pulling off a win if they hit top form.

In West Division 2, Stewartry have the long trip to play McLaren in what could be a thrilling encounter.

The Blacks are sitting in third place in the league with six wins and just two defeats this season, but McLaren are just two places below them and also have six victories this term.

In their last outings, both teams posted fine wins, with Stewartry thumping Strathendrick 33-6 away from home and McLaren beating Waysiders Drumpellier 43-5. This clash has the makings of a cracking match.

Wigtownshire have also been going well this season in West Division 3 as they bid to return to Division 2 following relegation last season. ’Shire are also placed third and host the team above them, Cumnock, as London Road.

Given their respective positions and recent form, this game also has the potential to produce fireworks and a very close result. Home advantage could be the deciding factor for the Stranraer lads.

All kick-offs are at 2pm.
