Reds down Accies

Glasgow Academicals 3 Newton Stewart 10

Newton Stewart RFC travelled to Glasgow Academicals with their strongest team this season on board and with a confident feeling in the air.

The game began with an early kicking match which allowed Newton Stewart to get the upper hand. The highly anticipated front row combination of S Hamilton and G McDonald didn’t fail to deliver with great inter linking play and hitting like freight trains.

Accies had a player sin-binned early and Newton piled on the pressure leading to D Sommerville converted a penalty to put the Reds three points to the good.

Newton Stewart were dominant on and off the field with a small but lively travelling crowd.

After relentless pressure Jamie Muir completed a well worked try with a simple run over the line. D Sommmerville converted again to make the score 10-0 for the Reds.

An inspiring captain’s run by A Gaw down the centre of the field ended with Newton awarded a penalty but it was missed.

However, Newton Stewart’s defence was just as strong as their attack with N Armstrong making a great try saving tackle to keep the Accies out. But finally, the home team did manage to get three points out of their attacking efforts.
