The annual battle for the County Cup, between rinks from the Galloway Province and the Rhins O’ Gallowa’ Province took place at Stranraer Ice Rink earlier this week.

The competition, sponsored by Agrovista Ltd, was won by the Rhins Province this year by a handsome margin, 32 shots, with the trophy going to the Portpatrick Curling Club rink of Kate Adams, Rory Hendry, Celia Coyle and John Smith.

The highest up rink in the losing province came from Kirkmabreck Curling Club with the John Smith Salver and prizes going to David Wilson, John Wilson, Maura Wilson and Derek McCallum.

After the two days of play, consisting of a total of 13 games of curling, the Rhins had scored 115 shots to the Galloway Province’s 83.

Galloway Province President Jim Cannon, before congratulating the winners, noted the passing of Galloway Province curler Robert Smith and former Galloway Province President Bobby McKenzie. Both has been great supporters of their clubs and the ice rink and will be much missed.

Jim then asked Peter Richardson, representing the sponsors Agrovista, to present the County Cup to the winners and prizes of butchers’ vouchers and the John Smith Salver to the highest up on the losing side and prizes of butchers’ vouchers.

Rhins O’ Gallowa’ Province President Norman Brown thanked the sponsors Agrovista for the many years of support hey have given to the County Cup and also to the two province secretaries, Janette Sloan and Louise Kerr, for organising the competition.
