Newton Stewart stand at the top of the South of Scotland League after beaten St Cuthbert Wanderers on Tuesday night by three goals to one at St Mary’s Park.

In a closely fought contest which Saints dominated in the early stages it was the visitors who went ahead in the thirty-fifth minute when Johnny Fisher sent a looping header over keeper Wilson’s outstretched arms from a cross ball from Ryan McKie. Nine minutes later Newton went two ahead when defender Kyle McCutcheon fired in a low shot from twenty-five yards which entered Saints net at the far post.

Five minutes after the break striker Robert Middleton challenged keeper Wilson to a fifty-fifty ball and came out on top to score goal number three, firing the ball into an empty net. In the fifty-fifth minute Saints drew a goal back through Steven Degnam, but the home side could not break down a sturdy Newton defence to score again and the three points went in the visitors’ favour to keep their league title ambitions on track.
