Newton Stewart keen to take full points

The South SFA Regional Challenge Cup reaches the quarter final stages this weekend with only Edusport Academy left representing the South of Scotland League.

The Hamilton based team travel to play Whitehill Welfare and are expected to show up well but Whilehill may well be a step too far for the South side.

There are six matches scheduled to be played in the South of Scotland League with league leaders Wigtown and Bladnoch travelling to New Abbey to play Abbey Vale.

Although the home side have been playing well recently they went down by a single own goal against Fleet Star last time out and by all accounts were struggling to find a goal. On the other hand Wigtown hit Crichton for six in Dumfries and are expected to take the three points from this contest to keep their place at the top of the table.

Newton Stewart suffered their first league defeat last Saturday at the hands of Lochar Thistle at Maxwelltown High School so will be keen to take the three points from their match against Fleet Star at Gatehouse to get their league title ambitions back on track.

Star though have shown some good form at times this season and the visitors could well find them a hard nut to crack. Following their victory last weekend Lochar will be keen to keep the momentum going when they travel to Lockerbie to play Mid-Annandale for a match that could go either way.

Mid are a formidable side on their own park and a share of the points is a distinct possibility. Heston Rovers host Nithsdale Wanderers at Palmerston Park for another match that could go close although Heston with home advantage look the more likely of the two teams to take the three points.

The two bottom placed teams meet in Dumfries when YMCA entertain Creetown with the visitors expected to take the points to leave the home side still looking for a victory since joining South football. Upper Annandale visit Dumfries to play Crichton for another match that looks too close to call where again the points could be shared.
