AS Newton Stewart Golf Club fights for survival due to financial pressures, it’s not been all doom and gloom at the club this season.

Despite the washout summer, the junior members of the club have been playing some sparkling golf.

The list of their achievements is impressive:

In the South of Scotland Matchplay competition, Con-
nor Bennewith was first and Fraser Hughes second. In the Wigtownshire Boys’
Championships Robert Hughan was runner-up.

In the main adult Wigtownshire Championships David McCreadie was second and Connor Bennewith third and, in the Newton Stewart Club Championships, David McCreadie was first and Aaron Splaine second.

The Scottish Schools’ Championships was won by the Dumfries and Galloway team which included Newton Stewart junior Connor Bennewith, who played with Connor Syme and Maxim Jackson from Dumfries.

The girls got in on the act too. Vanessa Ho won her heat in the “Wee Wonders” at Whitecraigs in her age group (5-7) and went on to compete in the final stage at St Andrews.

The onus is now on keeping the brightest talents in junior golf in the south-west of Scotland with a course to play on.
