Last Friday night, Gatehouse Tennis Club officially opened their new tennis court.

Unfortunately, Andy and Jamie Murray had other business to attend to and couldn’t make it but Kirkcudbright Tennis Club accepted the invitation to christen this fantastic upgraded facility with a friendly match between the two clubs.

Four couples from each club played each other over a round-robin format. Kirkcudbright took an early lead, Gatehouse pegged them back and finally in the last match Gatehouse took the honours and ran out as the winner. A great night was had by all and a special mention goes to the youngest player, Gregor Hamblin from Gatehouse, who performed strongly and gives great hope for the future of the Gatehouse Club.

Thanks go to Kirkcudbright Tennis Club for taking part in this inaugural match and hopefully there will be a return match soon.

This newly resurfaced court would not have been possible without generous funding support from the Murray Usher Foundation, the John Younger Trust, Awards for All Scotland, Gatehouse Gala and other generous contributions from local supporters. Special thanks must go to the club committee and Lusi Alderslowe who helped with the funding application.

The club has seen an increase in memberships and visitor numbers this season and the club night on Monday at 6pm is very well attended. There is to be a coaching programme in conjunction with the local primary school in Sept/Oct.
