A superb angled, raised take-out by skip James Maxwell won the Mochrum Cup for his Glasserton Curling club team in last Friday night’s final.
James, (with yours truly substituting for Colin Ferguson), Lindsay Galloway and Douglas Ballantyne beat the Penninghame Curling Club rink of Drew Paton, Bill Scott, Michael Dunlop and Trish Boult 11-7 in a contest that went right down to last stone of the last end.
After five ends of play the Glasserton foursome had a comfortable 8-2 lead, but some accurate play from Drew Paton after a guard was missed by the Glasserton team saw Penninghame right back into the final after scoring a three. They added a two in the seventh to go into the last end one shot down.
Penninghame were lying one shot at the back of the four foot when James Maxwell took deadly aim with his last shot and hit one of his own stones, short of the house, back at an angle onto the shot stone to score a cup-winning three.
At the presentations, Galloway Province President Jim Cannon congratulated the winners and the runners-up for putting on such a nail biting final for the spectators. He also thanked Frazer Hare, the owner of Alex McCleary Funeral Directors, for his continued support of the competition.
Jim then asked Elsie McKillop, last year’s winning skip, to present the trophy. James Maxwell then spoke, thanking his rink and his opposition for the sporting contest. Losing skip Drew Paton also spoke to congratulate the winners.
