Dog owners in Galloway have been benefiting from the expertise of Mel Duncan, who runs the popular dog agility class Madmutts locally.

Madmutts Agility Training School was established in 2011 with the aim of providing small. Friendly agility classes for any breed of dog and for anyone who wants to try the sport for fun or branch out into competition.

Classes are tailored to the individual experience of each dog and handler, with most of the group having started from scratch having never tried dog agility before.

Madmutts trainer Mel Duncan said: “The dogs range from Border collies, Labrador, Rotties, various terriers, spaniels, a shitzu and a Lancashire Heeler. Some are also rescue dogs and it is an absolute joy to see all the pupils developing their dog handling skills. Having basic obedience and a good recall is also an advantage, but I make the handler the dog’s motivation - no winding up dogs with toys!

“It’s no easy task steering a dog round an obstacle course and there is a lot of skill involved, which everyone has discovered. It also takes a lot of courage to put yourself and your dog in the competition ring, whether it be a fun show or a big Kennel Club Show. Having experienced Crufts and competition at championship level, I make sure the handlers who have decided to venture along to a competition are ready for it and I go along and support them as much as I can.

“The success at the recent DAGDAG show at Annan with three handlers from my group, each winning a first place plus other placings, is a tribute to the hard work they put in.”
