Machars Riding Club started the season in fine style with a good turnout of competitors making their way to Carty Port recently.

The weather was extremely kind, on this occasion, with the rain coming on as the last pole was carried from the arena.

It was pleasing to see new faces in the Elaine Ramsay sponsored class with competitors from last season getting to grips with riding off lead rein. It was a closely fought battle between brother and sister combination Finn and Katie McMiken for top spot, but on this occasion Katie was to take the lead in a time of 52.30 seconds some four seconds ahead of her brother. Third place went to new competitor Emma Ramsay with Brandy.

The fastest time of the day was to come in the 60cm Kevin Ball Farrier sponsored class. Carla Campbell and the athletic Brady set off at quite a speed and despite this managed turns which even a motorbike would have been proud of to finish in 24.53 seconds. Try as they might the other competitors couldn’t quite catch her with Emma McCornick and new ride for 2013 Joost coming the closest to take second spot in a respectable 30.86 seconds ahead of Izzy Miller-Smith with Chilli Pepper in third.

The Helen Ryman Arts sponsored 85cm saw another nail biting jump off with last drawn Rachel Baillie doing what seemed impossible to take the lead from Charlotte McDowall’s Miami Bubblegum by 1.51 seconds.

In the final pony class of the day there was no one smiling more than Hugh Paterson when his novice homebred pony Miami Moonbeam took the red rosette under the capable direction of Beth MacDonald. The pony did not fault as he set around the fences which were up to height at one metre. This is quite an amazing accomplishment for a five year old in only his second season of showjumping.

Senior competitors too arrived in good numbers. In the 75cm A.B and A Matthews class Liz Faulds and Bobby came first with a fantastic double clear in a time of 41.74 some six seconds ahead of Donald Beaton and Celtic Storm in a time of 48.41. Third place went to the fastest four faulter Anne Jolly and Olly Murs.

Twelve combinations came forward in the Caledonian Cheese Company 85cm class. Lorna Wilson and Millie were the outright winners returning with the only double clear.

Competitors enjoy new surface at Carty

Machars Riding Club and Carty Port Equestrian unveilied a new rubber surface last Sunday for the second event of their showjumping league.

Isla Campbell and Henry enjoyed a win in the first class of the day the Priory Vet Centre sponsored Wibbly Wobbly with a pleasing double clear in a very respectable 22.93 seconds with Joanne Wallace and George taking second place.

Eight combinations made their way to the arena for the Rug Bugs sponsored 50cm class. Of the eight starters seven made it to a shortened and heightened jump off. First drawn Isla Campbell set a good standard with a double clear in a time of 24.14 seconds. She had a nail biting wait to finish eventual second behind Izzy Miller-Smith and her consistent speed specialist Chilli Pepper who took the pole position in 21.26. Kirsty Fisher and Leo gave a smooth, flowing round to take third place.

Carla Campbell and Brady again recorded the fastest time of the day in the Kevin Ball Farrier 60cm breaking the finish barrier in 20.11 seconds.

It was a successful first trip of 2013 to Carty Port for Eilidh Fisher and Sam who took first place in the 70cm class with a fantastic double clear in a time of 23.53. Second place went to Rebecca Boss and Mango, the only other combination to record a double clear.

The 85cm Helen Ryman Arts class saw last drawn Caitlin Jolly and Looney Tunes take first place with a fast, flowing round breaking the timer in 24.04. Eilidh Fisher and Sam came second in a time of 31.16 seconds.

On her first trip to Carty, Elaine Clark enjoyed success in the Glenquicken Engineering 65cm with the beautiful Clover.

Whilst in the A B and A Matthews 75cm Joyce Lafferty and Riley upped their tempo to take first place with a double clear in 26.40 seconds.

Liz Faulds and Bobby were on a roll in the Caledonian Cheese Company 85cm. They were the only combination to successfully complete the course with a double clear. The crowd were certainly behind them, and a cheer came as they crossed the finish line.

The final class of the day saw some quality showjumping as the competitors met the 1m10 fences. Winning the class Beth MacDonald showed she was getting to grips with horses coming home clear with new ride for 2013 Miami Hulaballou. Leah Kelly and Ritchie tapped the last to finish second with a very respectable four faults.
