Galloway Cricket Club has something else to celebrate this week.
Lochlan Hughes, who is the most senior member of the junior team (now 13 years old), has won a bronze medal in the Wigtownshire Sports Council junior sports personality awards.
Lochlan has been playing cricket for Galloway Juniors for the past three years and last year played regularly with adults second team.
He won the club’s coveted Nick Van Zwanneberg most improved player trophy at last year’s end-of-season presentation dinner and has continued to improve throughout the winter, making the long trip from Kirkinner to Kirkcudbright every Wednesday evening for training.
Lochlan is maturing into a very impressive fast bowler and clean-bowled a couple of men in the last second XI match of the season in 2011.
On top of Lochlan’s personal cricketing skills and achievements, he has been a fantastic support and mentor to the younger cricketers. He has on numerous occasions helped as support coach in various primary level coaching sessions and has even helped some of the ladies team with hints and tips on batting and bowling.
This is the type of youngster the club is proud of and hopes to enlist more like him in the years to come.

The club has junior quick cricket teams from P4 upwards, a girls-only quick cricket team from P7 and below, a very successful under-13s team, a ladies team, a second XI and a first XI team in the premier division. It is particularly keen to boost the numbers in 13-17-year-old age group.
