Weather claims three fixtures
The weather claimed three of the six scheduled South of Scotland League matches on Saturday but the three that were played produced a total of 16 goals.
The highest aggregate scoreline was at New Abbey where Abbey Vale managed to beat bottom-placed Fleet Star 5-1. Jordan Brown scored the first goal for the home side after only seven minutes but Jamie Clarke found the net for the Gatehouse side nine minutes later to square the match.
Star’s joy, though, did not last very long with Craig Farnhill putting Vale ahead again within a minute. Clarke Chambers made it three and a Lee True shot was deflected past the visiting keeper, which went down as an own goal scored by Star’s Robbie McCraith, to give the home side a 4-1 advantage at the half time break. The fifth goal came in the 58th minute when Lee Malin struck for Vale to complete the scoring and to give Vale another three points to add to their tally.
At Meadow Park, Gavin Green gave Threave Rovers an early lead in the sixth minute in their match against Mid-Annandale, with Shaun Milligan doubling the scoreline from 30 yards in the 25th minute.
Darren Notman pulled a goal back for the visitors three minutes before the break to give Mids a fighting chance in the second period of play. However, the Lockerbie side could not build on their goal and within three minutes of the restart Milligan scored his second and his side’s third after he left the Mids keeper stranded and Threave sealed the points in the 57th minute when Michael Swan lobbed the keeper to give the home side a convincing victory.
At Blairmount Park, Newton Stewart secured the three points in a great second half display following a scoreless first half in their match against Crichton.
The home side went ahead three minutes after the interval when Johnny Fisher was pulled down by central defender Darren Johnstone in the 18-yard box. After dusting himself down, he despatched the ball beyond keeper Robert McColm who until then had pulled off some superb saves.
Three minutes later Calum Dunn slotted home from 12 yards following a great solo run and, with 15 minutes left to play, his brother Lewis produced the goal of the match after leaving four defenders in his wake to curl the ball in at the near post.
In the 81st minute, striker Micky Sutherland scored goal number four when he beat keeper McColm to a 50-50 ball to stroke it into the net from just inside the 18-yard box. In the last minute of the game Crichton’s Brodie Turner scored a consolation goal with an angular shot from 14 yards to complete the scoring.
