Weather calls the shots

FOR the second week in succession only two matches survived the winter weather with the other four becoming the latest victims of frozen pitches.

The much awaited Tweedie Cup final was one of the matches to suffer while the league match between St Cuthbert Wanderers and Creetown was called off by Referee Rod Williamson before the kick-off with both teams at St Marys Park.

The referee did however give the nod for the game to go ahead at Lockerbie between Mid-Annandale and Nithsdale Wanderers where the home side went on to take the three points in a three goals to one victory with Sean Bell claiming all three Mids goals.

This was a game with three penalty awards for the home side with the first coming five minutes before the break after Nithsdales Michael McRoberts had pulled down Darren Notman and was red-carded for his actions.

Jamie Robison however failed to find the net when keeper Jonathon Lopez saved, but right on the stroke of half-time Mids were awarded another spot-kick when Notman was again involved but this time around Sean Bell made no mistake to send the Lockerbie side in at the break with a one goal advantage.

Seven minutes into the second period of play Nithsdale were reduced to nine men when Gary Crosbie received a straight red card.

Five minutes later Mids were awarded their third penalty of the afternoon following a hand-ball incident in the eighteen yard box and again Bell found the net from the spot.

With four minutes left to play Sean Bell scored his hat-trick when he headed home from a Robison corner kick on the left.

With the final whistle looming Nithsdale scored a consolation goal when Colin Bell sent in a long range shot through a ruck of players past an unsighted Mids keeper.

New Abbey escaped the worst of the weather which allowed the match involving Abbey Vale and Heston Rovers to go ahead which resulted in a seven goal thriller with the home side coming out on top by five goals to two.

In the tenth minute the visitors failed to clear from a corner kick and Stuart Cameron was on hand to open the scoring.

Eight minutes later Fraser Sneddon found the head of Alan Clark from another corner to double Vales score and in the twenty ninth minute Ian Quinn beat two players before firing home the goal of the match to put the home side three ahead.

Right on the half-time whistle Jonathon Boyd gave Heston hope when he beat keeper Crolla from six yards but seven minutes after the re-start Vale trialist Sean Kearney restored the home sides three goals advantage when he chipped the Heston keeper to find the top corner of the net.

In the 72nd minute Boyd scored again for the visitors following a fine solo run but with two minutes left to play Kearney scored his second of the afternoon.
