Newton Stewart curler Jodie Milroy is still in with a real chance of being crowned Scottish Champion this weekend after winning four out of six games at the Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish Womens Championships at Perth Ice Rink this week.
Seventeen-year-old Jodie is playing lead stones for Gail Munro’s Stranraer team along with Lyndsay Cumming and 15-year-old Katie Wright.
But while Gail and Lyndsay have played in and won the Scottish Championships before, for Jodie and Katie this is their first experience of curling at this level.
The team got off to the best possible start winning their first four games on the trot before going down to the two toughest teams in the draw, Hannah Fleming’s Scottish Junior Champions and Eve Muirhead’s European Champions.
At the time of going to press, Team Munro still had two more must win round-robin games to play if they want to stay in the top four and progress to the weekend’s play off stage.
Jodie was really enjoying the experience when she spoke to The Galloway Gazette yesterday morning. She said: “It’s been absolutely brilliant to be playing at such a good level and the whole team are playing really well.
“We are confident we will be in the play offs.”
Stranraer curlers are very well represented at the championships with Vicki Adams playing second stones for Championship favourites Eve Muirhead’s team. Vicki’s sister Kay is playing second stoned for Jackie Lockhart’s rink. Katie Wright’s sister Vicky is playing lead for the Jennifer Dodds team and Abi Brown is leading for Hannah Fleming’s foursome.
The standings on Thursday morning were: Muirhead 5 -1 (after 6); Jackie Lockhart 5-2 (after 7); Gail Munro, Hannah Fleming and Sarah Reid 4-2 (after 6).
In the men’s draw Stranraer is represented by Jay McWilliam, who’s team are on a two win - three loss record after five games.
