STRANRAER secured the first silverware of the season on Saturday, when they won the South League Cup by beating St Cuthbert Wanderers 3-0 at Stair Park.

The first half was without goal and fairly even with both teams having chances without taking them. However, 10 minutes after the restart ,Craig Bradley broke the deadlock when he struck home from the edge of the 18-yard box when Saints couldn't defend a Richard Jones effort which they failed to clear properly.

Ex-Celtic trainee substitute Angus Cochrane ensured Stranraer's victory when the youngster came on to run the show by scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes.

With 10 minutes left to play, Cochrane drew the Saints keeper to slip the ball into an empty net, and with a couple of minutes left put the icing on the cake with a clever chip which went into the net past a stranded keeper.

South of Scotland League

Crichton 4, Creetown 1

Fleet Star 0, Wigtown & Bladnoch 6

Heston Rovers 1, Mid Annandale 2

Newton Stewart 6, Abbey Vale 1

Threave Rovers 5, Nithsdale Wands 0

In the South of Scotland league, there were 26 goals scored in the five games played with the defeated sides only scoring three of them.

Star without reply with striker Allen Murdoch scoring a hat-trick for the second week in succession. Robert John Paisley and Grant Carnochan added a goal each with the sixth being an own goal when Star keeper Alistair Cathro pushed a Ross McCrindle effort into his own net.

Newton Stewart also scored six against Abbey Vale with one in reply in a very good but deserved victory at Blairmount Park. Four goals from striker Sean Taylor and singles from Gary Smith direct from a corner and a header from substitute, 15-year-old Dean Fyffe, ensured the three points for the home side with Vale's sole counter coming five minutes after the half-time break through Stuart Cameron.

Threave Rovers made up ground on leaders Dalbeattie Star who had a free Saturday in a 5-0 victory over Nithsdale Wanderers at Meadow Park.

Two-nil up at the break through Jamie Struthers and Scott Wilby, Threave went on to win comfortably with Wilby scoring his second and his side's third from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Andrew Donely had been pulled down.

Darren Kerr added number four 10 minutes from time and a Paul Cook header in time added-on saw the Castle Douglas side go nap and move to within three points of the league leaders.

Roman Soltys of Crichton was another player to score a hat-trick in his side's 4-1 victory against Creetown, with Davy Kennedy scoring the fourth. Ryan McKie scored the consolation for the visitors.

Heston Rovers were beating Mid-Annandale by a single goal at the break through a Jonathon Boyd penalty kick scored in 15 minutes, but the Glencaple side were pegged back in the second half when Darren Notman equalised five minutes after the break and Chris Norvel scored the winner in the 55th minute.

lAbove right, Stranraer celebrate their victory in the South League Cup, and right, it's a Blues pile-up, with Craig Bradley in the midst of it all.
