South sides up for the cup

The South League Cup competition starts this weekend with four first round and two second round ties scheduled to be played.

The top first round tie looks like being at Maryfield where Heston Rovers entertain neighbours Crichton. Although the visitors have not got off to the best of starts in the league they are a tough nut to crack and Heston will have to be at their best to see off their challenge. The contest looks like it could go close and one which could even take more than the regulation 90 minutes to decide.

The match at Trammondford, where Wigtown and Bladnoch play hosts to Nithsdale Wanderers, looks like another that could go either way, with home advantage perhaps being the deciding factor.

Threave Rovers seem to have found their scoring touch but again will have to be in top form to see off the challenge of a promising Newton Stewart side who are hopeful of having a good season. Again, home advantage could play a part on who progresses.

St Cuthbert Wanderers should win comfortably in their match at St Mary’s Park against Stewartry neighbours Fleet Star. Star are a very young team who are still finding their feet while Saints look to be a team who this season could be challenging for trophies, and the Kirkcudbright side should ease through to the second round without any great problems.

In the two second round ties, the match at Castle Cary Park could go close when Creetown entertain Mid-Annandale. Either side is more than capable of winning in what could be a fairly high-scoring match.

Abbey Vale play hosts to Dalbeattie Star and, following Star’s recent 5-0 league victory at Islecroft, it is hard to see Vale taking anything from this match, though home advantage this time could produce a much closer contest.
