South returns to league action
The games in the South on Saturday are all league matches, with leaders Dalbeattie Star looking to maintaining their winning run in their match at Trammondford against second-placed Wigtown and Bladnoch.
The home side have been producing some good results so far this season, although they did go down 4-1 against Threave Rovers at home last weekend in a League Cup match.
This fixture, though, will be a strong test for Star but these are the kind of contests that they will need to win to retain their league championship. However, if the home side strike recent good form then a share of the points could be a distinct possibility.
Challengers St Cuthbert Wanderers will be keen to put last Saturday-s 4-1 League Cup defeat at the hands of Heston Rovers behind them when they line up against Nithsdale Wanderers at St Mary’s Park.
Saints will start as favourites to take the three points although the Sanquhar side are more than capable of matching them, with home advantage perhaps being the deciding factor though Nithsdale could well spring a surprise or two before the outcome is decided.
Threave Rovers look like again being up top this season challenging for honours and should take three points from their home match against Mid-Annandale. The Castle Douglas side look to have settled down following changes within the club and it would be a surprise if they did not win this contest comfortably.
Abbey Vale will be hoping to add to Fleet Star’s poor season when they play hosts to the Gatehouse side at New Abbey. Star have only scored two goals so far this season while losing by high margins in most games and there is nothing to suggest they will take anything from this match, while the home side will be very confident about taking another league scalp.
Heston Rovers travel to Castle Cary Park to play Creetown in a contest that is another that could go either way. However, the Maryfield side will start the match as favourites to take the three points. Creetown, though, are never an easy side to beat on their own pitch and this game could well go close.
Newton Stewart have Crichton as their visitors at Blairmount Park for another match that could turn out to be very even. The Hospital Park side look to have recovered from a poor start to the season and will be looking to take the points from this contest but the Creesiders are producing some good football at times and if they could find consistency then they would be more than a match for any other side in the league. This contest is another which could see the two teams taking a share of the spoils.
