Snowman test for rally duo

MACHARS-based rally team Fraser Wilson and Steven Broll will be taking part this weekend in the Hankook Scottish Rally Championship in Inverness.

Driver Wilson and co-driver Broll, both from Port William, are hoping to have a good start to the rallying season in the Arnold Clark Thistle Hotel Snowman Rally where they had a very good result last year.

Looking ahead to the rally Fraser has bought himself another Vauxhall Nova 1.4 16v (165bhp), yellow in colour again after they had a "crash-out" in Perth last season. After watching coverage of the race and checking the car over, it was found the car had engine failure and not driving error which was very reassuring for both boys.

The team entered the Galloway Hills Rally at the end of last season in the new car, however after three stages and the engine management light continually on, they decided to pull out due to an oil pressure problem, and with it being a new car they did not want to take any chances.

Fraser, who does most of the repair work on his car, said he had to put his hand in his pocket, again, as the car engine required a complete re-build.

A couple of weeks ago the boys took themselves to a test day in Dalry Forest Estate to check out the running of the engine.

Fraser had his service crew on hand should there be any technical problems with the engine or the suspension, but with nothing major happening during the test Fraser was delighted and was very happy with the way the car handled in the conditions.

With the Snowman Rally this weekend Fraser and Steven know the driving conditions will be completed different for them, snow and ice will just be one more factor to contend with in the challenging event. The boys would like to thank their families and sponsors, old and new, for their continued support: Ian Broll, Joiner & Undertaker; Galloway Plumbing; Signright Graphix; Galloway Astronomy Centre; Penkiln Building Merchants; Cairndoon B&B - Dumfries; Crown Hotel, Newton Stewart & Bladnoch Inn, Colin Faulds, Tipper Hire; Pheonix Electricals, Wigtown Road Service Station, Kinnears for Carpets and our local newspaper The Galloway Gazette - without them they would not be able for fulfil their ambitions.
