Players forced to cut grass around lines

THE state of the region’s football pitches was highlighted last weekend when players in a Sunday league had to cut the grass themselves before they could proceed.

The Stewartry Sunday League lads were forced to find a lawnmower to strim the lines so the referee could see them, despite paying a fee for use of the ground.

Willie Vivers ordered the quick-fix ahead of the Market Inn v Ferytoon game at the Birkland Road pitch in Castle Douglas last Sunday, and was also forced to scoop water out of the goalmouth before play commenced.

Council officials admitted last week that pitch repairs required discussion between bodies but added that as the Birkland Road field was taken from marshland, it would be liable to drainage issues.

Promised repairs to Kirkcudbright’s pitch were carried out last week.
