On track for an athletic day

THE Stranraer Half-Marathon plus junior runs, organised by Dumfries and Galloway Council's Leisure and Sport Service, take place on Saturday.

Throughout the day there are nine races. All will start and finish at Stranraer Academy athletics track.

The day will begin at 9.30am with the 14, 15 & 16 years race, the senior fun run and the half-marathon walkers.

The main race of the day is the half-marathon, which is accurately measured at a distance of 13 miles and 192.5 yards. This will begin at 10.30am.

The course records are held by Stephen Wylie, Cambuslang, in 1 hr 8 minutes, 35 seconds in 2003 and Jill Shannon, Laggan Valley, in 1 hr 21 minutes 16 seconds in 2005.

Following this, at 2.00pm, the 12 & 13 years race over 2,100 metres will take place. The final races are for the youngest competitors on the athletics track, commencing at 2.30pm with the 10 & 11 years fun run (1,400 metres), at 3.00pm with the 4 & under years of age, then the 5& 6 years at 3.10pm and 7, 8 & 9 years at 3.20pm running 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres respectively.

Entries for all races will be accepted on the day but a further 2.00 handling fee will be charged.

All race finishers will receive a goody bag including a t-shirt & commemorative medal.

Spectators are very welcome to come along, cheer on the runners and support the event.

However, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, there will be some delays on the roads.

The roads affected will be the A75 into Stranraer, London Road, McMasters Road, Culhorn Road, School Road, Eastwood Avenue, Bayview road, Ladies Walk, Hanover Street, Lewis Street, Stoneykirk Road, Commerce Road, A77 and other rural roads.
