New league season is now underway

This Saturday sees a full list of South of Scotland League matches scheduled to be played with the still unbeaten Dalbeattie Star looking to maintain this record when they travel to Trammondford Park to play Wigtown and Bladnoch.

The Wigtownshire side have started the season with a bit of inconsistency and will be well tested by the fire power of the Stewartry side who could well take the three points from what may well be a very close contest. Champions Threave Rovers have the buoyant Creetown as their visitors to Meadow Park and this will be a real test for the young Creetown side who have shown that they may well be a force to be reckoned with this season and are more than capable on the day of taking something from this match although the home side will start as favourites.

Stranraer have Crichton as their visitors to Stair Park for what could also be a very close encounter although home advantage may well be the deciding factor in this match with Stranraer taking the three points against a visiting team who are still not yet firing on all cylinders.

St Cuthbert Wanderers and Heston Rovers lock horns at St Marys Park and again this match could go close with Heston showing good early season form and a share of the points could be a distinct possibility. Fleet Star travel over to Lockerbie to play Mid-Annandale with both sides showing an improvement over last seasons form but with home advantage Mids could well be the happier of the two sides come the end of this contest.

Newton Stewart travel to New Abbey to play Abbey Vale with the home side failing to show their good form of last season so far this time around.

However Vale are always a tough nut to crack on their home ground and will be no different in this match although the Creesiders are looking to improve on last seasons league placing and are still unbeaten in the league so far this season having drawn two matches and won the other. This match could go either way depending on who strikes the best form on the day but on present form the visitors will start as favourites to take the three points.

The midweek matches are all ifs and buts depending on the outcome of the previous midweek fixtures with the one certain match to go ahead at Blairmount where Newton Stewart and Wigtown and Bladnoch play each other for the second midweek game in succession but this time in the league.

The South of Scotland League Cup semi-finals will take place a week on Saturday featuring Dalbeattie Star and Creetown and Nithsdale Wanderers against Threave Rovers. Dalbeattie managed a narrow victory over Heston Rovers in a three goal match at Islecroft with both teams playing good flowing football with the first early chances falling to Hestons McCrone and Wright.

However it was the home side who took the lead on the half hour mark when a misplaced pass back was intercepted by Parker who cut the ball back for striker Roman Soltys to give his side a slender half time lead.

The second started as the first with Heston going close through Kilpatrick and McCrone but the Star keeper was equal to the chances until the sixty second minute of play when Heston midfielder Gary Tweedie struck a dipping shot from thirty yards to level the match. Star keeper then pulled off some further excellent saves but as Star pushed for a winner Scott Milligan secured victory four minutes from time when he netted from close in when he followed through on a Soltys effort which had come back off the upright. Heston Rovers Manager Raymond Boyd said after the match;

" The Heston lads were gutted after the match as they felt that they had done enough to win the match."

Following a goalless first half at St Marys Park the visitors Threave Rovers overcame St Cuthbert Wanderers in the second period of play recording a two goal victory to secure their semi-final place. An Andrew Donely header from a corner kick three minutes after the interval and a side footed effort into the bottom corner of the net by Sean Milligan ten minutes from time gave the Castle Douglas side victory over their Stewartry neighbours.

Creetown ran up a remarkable eight goals to one victory over Fleet Star at Garries Park with Barry Curtis opening the scoring and Scott Mazza scoring two more before the break although a Davy McKie penalty just before the half time whistle gave the home side some hope. In the second half Creetowns Liam Muir scored a hat-trick as the home side crumpled and Mazza added another two to complete the rout which by all accounts could have been many more had it not been for the Star keeper performing well. Nithsdale Wanderers recorded a five goals to nil victory over Stranraer at Lorimer Park to secure their respective semi-final places in two weeks time. Davy Thomson gave the home side a one goal half time advantage with Davy Kennedy, Paul Cairney, Paul Weir and Jim Houston adding singles each as Nithsdale went nap and on this kind of form Threave Rovers will be treating the semi final match on the 28th August with some apprehension

Wigtown and Bladnoch improved their league table position with a two goals to one victory over Abbey Vale at Trammondford Park with a Robert Jamieson double countering a single from Vales Mark Hay while Crichton and Mid-Annandale shared the points at Hospital Park in a one all draw. In a very close match Ian Quinn scored with a dipping shot from thirty yards out to give the home side the lead at the break but Midst played much better in the second half and levelled the match on the hour mark. A slip by central defender Darren Johnstone let the visitors Muir in and although his effort was blocked on the line the ball sprung up into the air where substitute Shaun Henderson was on hand to head home from six yards out.

Although Crichton had the ball in the net almost on the final whistle it was ruled offside .
