Merrick rally ready to return

It may still be 10 months away, but already plans are being drawn up for the 2013 Merrick Stages Rally, the penultimate round of the MSA Scottish Rally Championship.

The organising committee met at the weekend to start the ball rolling for the
event, which will be held on Saturday, September 7.

For the fourth successive year, the Merrick Stages will start and finish in Wigtown, with the County Buildings acting as rally headquarters.

Following Sunday’s meeting, rally manager Allan Marshall said the prospects were looking positive at this early stage.

“It’s no secret that this year’s event was badly affected by a reduction in entries – as most rounds of the championship were. While we can’t predict how thing will shape up across the series in 2013, there’s certainly strong support for the Merrick locally.

“I’ve had a couple of good meetings with the regional councillors for the area, and they’re backing the rally 100 percent to remain in Wigtown.

“So, what I would say is that it’s upwards and onwards for 2013. Certainly the organising committee are willing the event forward, and will be setting their sights on producing and promoting a first-class round of the Scottish championship, as we strive to do every year.”

This year’s Merrick Stages proved to be the deciding round of the championship, with Dumfries ace David Bogie winning an historic fourth successive Scottish crown.

Regular updates on the 2013 event will be posted on www.merrickstages.co.uk.
