Kate wins Edinburgh International
The Stranraer rink that won the junior qualifer at Dumfries last weekend.
Stranraer Ladies Curling Club president Kate Adams had a great weekend in winning the Edinburgh International Seniors at Murrayfield Ice Rink beating the world senior silver medallists in the process.
Kate and her rink of Catherine Brown, Jill Florence and Elspeth Johnston beat Barbara Watt’s team, the reigning Scottish Senior Champions, 5-4 in a nail-biting final.
Meanwhile, at Lockerbie, the prestigious Superspiel was won by a rink skipped by Frazer Hare from Stranraer. Wigtown curler Christine Cannon was also there warming up her rink ahead of a crack at the Scottish Senior title in 2013. She was beaten in the quarter-finals.
Galloway Province League
The first round of games in the Galloway Province League for 2012/13 took place at Stranraer Ice Rink last Thursday. Wigtown CC, the defending champions, took on Penninghame and the scores were: Stuart Cannon, Wigtown, 6, George Milroy, Penninghame, 4; Jim Cannon, Wigtown, 14, Drew Paton, Penninghame, 7.
The next games will take place on Tuesday, December 4, when Penninghame play Minnigaff and Wigtown play Glasserton.
Stranraer junior curlers won the under-15 area qualifiers at Dumfries Ice Bowl last weekend. The team of Euan Kyle, Stuart Kyle, Andrew Gilmor and Lauren Smith won through against teams from Kelso, Dumfries, Lockerbie and Ayr. The Stranraer rink won a close last game to qualify for the national finals to be held at Braehead Ice Rink in March. They will be joined there by the Dumfries rink who won the under 13 qualifiers.
Stranraer teenage curler Vicky Wright, playing second stones for Jennifer Martin, won the Thun Invitational in Switzerland at the weekend.
Coached by Olympic gold medallist and Jennifer’s mum Rhona, Jennifer, Hazel Smith, Vicky and Mhairi Baird beat Russia’s Julia Portunova 5-3 in the final to claim this European Junior Curling Tour event title.
