Galaxy of stars on Galloway ice
REGULAR members of Stranraer Ice Rink were left open mouthed in astonishment on Tuesday night when a galaxy of sports stars suddenly appeared to try their hand at curling. Scotland rugby hero and 'Strictly' favourite
Kenny Logan, England and Arsenal full back Lee Dixon, now a pundit on Match of the Day, and former Newcastle United centre forward Les Ferdinand all received some coaching in the 'roaring game' from Galloway Ladies members Louise Kerr, who is also a reporter on the Galloway Gazette, and Helen Vance.
The intrepid sportsmen were all part of former England international rugby union player Lawrence Dallaglio's charity bike ride round the rugby capitals of Europe.
Dallaglio, who did not risk life and limb on the slippy stuff, has set up a charitable foundation in memory of his mother who recently died of cancer.
He is attempting to complete a six-week long "cycle slam" by cycling from Rome to Edinburgh via Paris, Twickenham, Cardiff and Dublin.
Dallaglio, part of England's Rugby World Cup winning team in 2003, hopes to raise 1 million for charity and the total raised so far is 706,597, which includes a 100 donation from the Galloway Ladies who had a quick whip round after they heard what Dallaglio was doing.
Dallaglio recorded his amazement at the beauty of Dumfries and Galloway.
"This was simply the best road we have ridden, through the most beautiful countryside you've seen, with no traffic, and clear blue skies. And then Kenny Logan says "it's much nicer further north".
"Bring it on," he added.
