Fourth time lucky for Newton
THIS game finally went ahead at the fourth time of asking having been postponed three times due to the weather.
Newton Stewart 4
Heston Rovers 2
The incentive to win was a visit to the Edinburgh area to play East of Scotland top team Whitehill Welfare in the quarter finals, and the home side went about their business right from the start with a day out in the Capital their obvious target.
The first 10 minutes were played in midfield, but when a long throw-in by Andrew McEwan resulted in Gary Smith crashing the ball off the upright, the game came to life.
Heston were awarded a corner kick on the left, central defender Ben Willetts was unlucky not to connect properly after keeper Harry Fidler had mis-handled.
In the 14th minute, Gary Tweedie should have opened the scoring for the visitors, but he fired over the bar with an open goal in front of him following a goalmouth scramble.
In the 21st minute a Colin Gordon free kick from 20 yards found the upright to deny Heston the opener, but with Newton on the ascendency, six minutes later they took the lead.
A free kick was taken by Willie Cloy and from 25 yards out, Gary Smith volleyed into the top right hand corner an unstoppable shot which left keeper McCulloch stranded on his goal line.
Eleven minutes later, Newton doubled their score when Davy Hyslop played a superb pass through to Stewart Taylor who rounded the keeper for goal number two.
The Creesiders were coasting, but five minutes before the break they gave away a goal, when Fraser Magee was left unmarked at a corner kick to head into the net.
The goal though was heavily disputed by the home side, as it was cleared from the line, but the assistant referee indicated the ball had crossed the line and the goal stood.
Three minutes after the break, Sean Taylor had the opportunity to wrap the game up when he went one on one with the keeper, but his shot went wide. The home side though did go further ahead in the 62nd minute when Stewart Taylor scored from the penalty spot after a Heston defender had hand balled in the box.
Five minutes later, Sean Taylor managed to find his elusive goal following some good work by McEwan which sent him through the middle to side foot past keeper McCulloch into the bottom corner of the net.
Although McEwan didn't score, he played a great part in the game and in the 74th minute, he brought out the save of the day from McCulloch when he attempted to head home, but the keeper made an excellent stop to deny his superb effort.
Two minutes later though, Heston found a lifeline when Grant Learmont scored direct from a free kick 20 yards out for the visitors' second.
The visitors finished strongly but could not find the net with Newton,s defence playing very well to keep them at bay and at the final whistle they enjoyed a deserved victory.
