BOXERS from the Whithorn Bravehearts Boxing Club travelled up to Glasgow last weekend to compete in the western district championships, coming home with two gold medals.

Tyler ‘Hot Dog’ Jolly beat C Jackson from Irvine Vineburgh in his semi-final of the 48 kilo category and then took the title by wining the final against experienced boxer J Kennedy from Broadwood ABC.

Bravehearts coach Wullie Martin said: “Young Tyler is showing great potential. His non-stop drive and fitness are winning these tough bouts and he even managed to throw in an ‘Ali shuffle’ while throwing his right hand which pleased the judges.”

Entered in the tough middle weight category were two Bravehearts, Kit ‘Animal’ Wright and Daniel ‘Guns’ Purves, The draw was favourable as the Bravehearts drew other opponent in the first round avoiding each other. Purves boxed against R McGinnley from Kilmarnock and won his opening bout, while Wright boxed against an experienced boxer, G Provan from Orbiston ABC, and just lost a tightly fought contest.

The final was held on the Sunday and Purves was all set to get revenge on Proven after the Orbiston boxer had snatched the win over his teammate. From the bell Daniel set to work booming his trademark powerful jab at the Orbiston lad, who defended himself well. There was no question about either boxers’ fitness as the following three rounds became a blistering bombardment of strength and determination about who was taking the gold medal home. The score going in to the last round was even at four each but Bravehearts coach Tom Jolly gave Purves new instructions to let the big ammunition loose and push for the win, Daniel duly did and over the last two minutes of the bout when his experience and power confirmed the win and he became the new middleweight western district champion for 2012.

This Friday the Bravehearts are travelling to Carlisle with three boxers to compete in a return match. On Saturday they are heading to Edinburgh with senior boxer Ryan Fairhurst to compete in the preliminary rounds of the Scottish Championships.

There will be a full report on both events next week.
