NINETEEN-year-old Stoneykirk teenager Abigail Brown will be heading to Sweden next month for the World Junior Curling Championships after her team won last weekend’s Scottish Junior Championships at Aberdeen.

Abi plays lead for the Hannah Fleming team, and along with teammates Abi Spence and Lauren Gray, they come through the week long round-robin to beat Hazel Smith team 9-2 in last Sunday’s final.

The girls will now travel to Oestersund for the world championships from March 3 - 10.

Proud mum Lynn said: “That was their third final in three years. The have all worked very hard this year and it’s nice to see them getting something back.”

Also travelling to Sweden there will be Stranrear curler Hamilton McMillan, as third player in the Kyle Smith team, the winners of the boys championships. Both Abi and Hamilton are carrying on a family tradition as Abi’s dad Norman was Scottish and World Junior Champion in 1980 and Hamilton’s father was Scottish Junior Champion in 1985, winning a bronze at the World Juniors.

There were a total of fifteen young curlers with connections to Stranraer Ice Rink playing in the finals and two of them, Lauren Morgan and Euan Kyle, both won awards for good sportsmanship.
