RUGBY: ’Shire youths just edged out

Wigtownshire Under-18s were in action for the first time this year on Saturday last. The fixture, a “friendly”, was against a very experienced and much-vaunted side who have finished third in the league above the one the local boys play in. Their ranks contain a number of young men who have been selected for representative honours at various levels in the Scottish game. Newton Stewart come full circle

From a time many moons ago when Newton were entrenched in a mire of losses and when Irvine issued a five-try display of running rugby, how things have changed. Without ball, running rugby is not quite the same. Against a well-organised defence, the touchline tends to arrive before the try and trying to obtain decent ball against a superior pack all make for where Newton Stewart are now as opposed to then.

R & A Hannay success for Machars rink

The final of the R & A Hannay Handicap Competition, sponsored by Scottish Fuels, was played out last Friday night at the North West Castle Hotel’s Curling Rink in Stranraer. This ever popular event is unique in that by virtue of handicapping each player in a team with plus or minus shots, it offers relatively inexperienced players the opportunity of defeating better more skillful players. The competition has been strongly supported by Scottish Fuels (formerly Shell) for over twenty years.
