League’s top two clash

South of Scotland League leaders Newton Stewart travel to Sanquhar this Saturday to play second-top Nithsdale Wanderers in a match that could have a significant say on where the league title ends up.

If either club are to have any outside chance of landing the championship, then this is a must-win game for both.

Home advantage favours Nithsdale and they will be up for this contest having beaten Newton Stewart at Blairmount by 3-2 earlier in the season. However, the Creesiders are enjoying a 10-league match unbeaten run and this encounter could be an exciting and enthralling event for the supporters of both sides.

It was a blow for the Wigtownshire side to have central defender Micky Wilson sent off last Saturday against Mid-Annandale at Galabank as he will now miss this contest. And with striker Roman Soltys in such good scoring form at present, it looks like he could well be one of the main dangers to Newton’s title aspirations.

With so much at stake for both sides, this contest could actually end up stalemate with the points shared.

That is a result that would suit title favourites Wigtown and Bladnoch. Wigtown are expected to take the three points easily against visitors Abbey Vale to maintain their interest in the title race and to increase their goal difference at the same time. Vale are not enjoying the best of seasons and it would be a major shock if this match ended up in anything but a comfortable victory for the Trammondford Park side.

The other title contenders, St Cuthbert Wanderers, have a home match against Lochar Thistle in a contest that could well go close. Saints will start as slight favourites to take the three points although they may well have to be at their best to do so and to keep themselves in the race for the title.

Heston Rovers travel to Castle Cary Park to play bottom-placed Creetown and should take the three points from this encounter, while Fleet Star play hosts to a Crichton team who seem to have found some good form of late. The Hospital Park side could yet have a say in where the title lands this season and are expected to take the three points from this contest.
