Hockey ladies struggle

Hillhead Ladies 5, Dumfries Ladies 1s 1

Dumfries conceded four goals in the first half as they struggled to find their form on a wet and slow playing surface.

Hillhead created chances through a number of penalty corners and dominated the first half. Dumfries rallied spirits and played much better in the second half, the only goal coming from a lovely spell of passing between Naomi Cowan and scorer Emma Miller.

Hillhead were, however, on top for the whole match and Dumfries keeper Ally McCubbin was deservedly awarded player of the match as she displayed her skilful acrobatics to keep the score line to 5-1.

Clydesdale Western 1, Dumfries Ladies 0 (West District Cup quarter-final)

Dumfries travelled back to Glasgow on Sunday to emulate their impressive cup runs of previous seasons but were halted by Clydesdale Western who found a lucky goal through a mis-hit bouncing ball.

Possession was evenly apportioned between the sides and Dumfries came close on a number of occasions but could not convert.

Naomi Cowan produced two notable performances at the weekend, leading the attacking efforts on both days.

Loch Lomond Ladies 0, Dumfries 2s 4

Dumfries made the journey to Helensburgh to play Loch Lomond, determined to overturn a defeat to the same team at home, earlier in the season, and Saturday definitely was different outcome, with Dumfries never going to lose.

The defence of Georgia, in goal, Anne, Julie and Sue soaked up any attacks from Loch Lomond, and fed the midfield.

Dumfries were on the attack for much of the game, with the midfield of Anna, Beth, Angie and Glad working well together to build play and release the ball to Emily, Maz, Hollie/Tammy up front.

Dumfries won a number of penalty corners and from one of them Angie struck home the first goal before half-time. In the second half, Emily added two goals by neatly running round the goalkeeper, and, not to be outdone, her sister Hollie added a goal of her own to round off a very good team effort.

The Ladies 2nd XI face Stepps this Saturday (December 14) with a 12.30pm passback at KGV, Dumfries. The first XI face Western Wildcats, also at King George V this weekend, with a 2.15pm passback. These matches signal the end the first half of the season for both teams.
