Haig Gordon Cup R2 means just two league fixtures

There are only two South of Scotland League matches scheduled to be played this Saturday with the other games being in the second round of the Haig Gordon Cup.

In the league Newton Stewart will play Fleet Star at Blairmount Park for a contest that could well go close. Neither team is firing on all cylinders this season so far so this match could well end up in a high scoring draw although the Creesiders with home advantage will start as favourites to take the three points in what looks like being a close encounter.

The match being played at Sanquhar could go close as well where Nithsdale Wanderers entertain Heston Rovers. The home side are another team that is failing to find any consistent form so far although they are more than capable of taking the points from this contest. Heston though are a tough nut to crack and will start as slight favourites to record a victory. The pick of the Haig Gordon Cup ties is at Castle Cary Park where Creetown play hosts to Wigtown and Bladnoch. Wigtown are not as effective as they have been in recent years wheras Creetown are on form at present and are more than capable of taking the scalp of the Trammondford side. This match though could well go close and in fact may take more than the scheduled ninety minutes play to decide who progresses into the next round.

Crichton have Abbey Vale as their visitors to Hospital Park and although the home side threw away a three goal lead last time out against Creetown they are not expected to slip up in this contest.

Mid-Annandale have a home tie against Dumfries YMCA at Lockerbie for a match they are expected to win but the YMCA side are showing this season that they are no pushovers and are more than capable of pulling off a shock result.

The match at St Mary’s Park where St Cuthbert Wanderers and Lochar Thistle clash is another match that looks like it could be an entertaining tie with more than a few goals from both sides to keep the spectators happy. Home advantage favours Saints and with their prolific goal scorers in form they are expected to progress although Lochar could well push them all the way to the line.
