Earl of Eaghan and Arlene McNabney won the the 1.10m showjumping class at Wigtown Show

With a dismal forecast many competitors were wondering if the planned showjumping at Wigtown Agricultural Show would go ahead last Wednesday. This event had to be cancelled two years ago due to ground conditions however this time the ground and weather were ideal for the event.

The Wigtown Show Showjumping competition, run by Machars Riding Club, got underway with the Senior competitors at 10.30am. Six combinations came forward in this class and of the six four made it through to the second phase. Jennifer-Ann McWilliam gave the first double clear on the beautiful Windsor in a time of 52.87 seconds. She then had a nail biting wait to see if her efforts were good enough to secure second place. Alex Jones was second last to go and from the off it was clear that she had victory in her sights. From a fast moving pace she made a fantastic turn back to number 10 an upright set across the arena, before completing the track in a super time of 35.41 seconds to take first place and leave Jennifer-Ann in eventual second.

As the fences went up to 80cm so did the number of competitors and standard of competition. Rachael Baillie made the successful transition to Senior level competition onboard her speedy dun mare Connie. The lengthy jump off track appeard to suit this combination and no one could quite reach the time they set of 27.78 seconds, with Jill Kirkpatrick and Solway Secret taking second in a time of 34.68seconds.

Whilst they had to settle for second in the 80cm Jill and Solway Secret were to go one better in the 95cm taking first place as a result of sharp turns and taking fence 10 on an angle making their approach to the infamous wavy planks look easy. They split the finish arm in a time of 35.58 seconds to take the lead from Charlotte McDowall and Miami Bubblegum who had to settle for second on this occasion.

The track for the 1m10 class saw the majority of competitors fault in the first phase with only Arlene McNabney embarking on the second phase with her two coloured geldings Dancing Cavalier and Earl of Eaghan. Despite her best efforts Arlene did not record a double clear with both horses dropping a pole towards the end of the track. However her sterling efforts gave her not only first with Earl of Eaghan in a time of 33.54 but also second with Dancing Cavalier in a slightly slower time of 37.93 seconds.

Following the presentation of awards in the 1m10 Senior class, the fences were lowered for what is always a crowd pleaser – the lead rein. This class puts pressure not only on the child but the adult who is leading. It was a good day for the McConnell family who were assisted by Dad. Jack took an early lead on Nicki in a time of 55.63 seconds but this initial lead was short lived as Birthday girl Abi McKinstry took the lead in a faster time of 52.44 seconds with Queenie. However Dad Munro was not to be outdone and took the lead back with younger sister Zoe who was also riding Nicki. This meant that first place went to Zoe McConnell, ahead of Abi McKinstry who finished second with Jack McConnell taking third.

Isla Campbell is a Junior competitor recognised for her speedy jump offs although more recently she has been out of top spot due to a change of pony. However for Wigtown Show she was back on board Henry, a Campbell family stalwart, to defend the Wibbly Wobbly Championship that she won back in 2013. There was no stopping her today and the little liver chestnut answered every question perfectly to take an early lead and remain in top spot at the end of the class.

Team Calgow dominated the remaining Junior Classes with victories in the 65cm, 85cm and 1m classes. First victory for the team was to go to Jade Stewart and Shooting Star. This combination have enjoyed success on home soil but this victory at an agricultural show has to be one of their best to date. In the 85cm class Quinn Jolly and Out of the Blue were to prove unstoppable returning the fastest of three double clears. The remaining two double clears came from Sophie Everett on Lady and Lucky who took second and third respectively. The final class of the day is always a closely fought battle as the juniors compete for the Machars Riding Club trophy. Last year’s winner Iona Campbell and Murphy X had to settle for second this year having a few communication errors in the second phase to complete with 8 faults, behind what seemed was to prove an untouchable round from Caitlin Jolly and Looney Tunes.

The annual Jump In Your Jammies event is becoming a popular tradition on the Machars Riding Club calendar, and this year was no exception with an excellent turn-out of competitors, with many new competitors for 2014 making an appearance at Carty Port. This year as in previous years, the jammies did not disappoint and varied from colourful shorts to onsies.

Iona Campbell and Henry enjoyed a successful trip winning both the 55cm and 65cm pony classes with fantastic turns and a fast flowing pace. Rhona Baillie and Fern made an excellent attempt to catch them, however they narrowly missed out on first place but took second ahead of Georgie Barr and Fudge who came third in their first attempt at 55cm-a fantastic achievement.

Klaudia Klyza and Mango have developed into a competitive combination in recent weeks and on this trip to Carty took the red rosette in the 75cm pony class with the only double clear. In the horse section Julia Graham and Rock Angel took first in the 75 and 85cm classes with the only double clear.

Caitlin Jolly had another fantastic outing with the ever consistent Looney Tunes and Ace of Spades to not only take first but first and second. She set a super standard with Ace of Spades to take an early lead in a time of 20.26 seconds. The remaining field of ten starters tried hard to catch her but Ace of Spades had to settle for second when Caitlin and Looney Tunes finished in an excellent time of 19.20 seconds to take first.
