Glorious day for Working Hunter Show

Stranraer & District Riding Club’s annual Working Hunter Show went ahead in glorious sunshine, after weeks of worrying if the ground would be dry enough.

Entries were up on last year and competitors travelled from as far afield as Lockerbie and Seamill. The Working Hunter classes were judged by Wallace Donnan from Hawick and Dennis Macauley from Downpatrick. They had a busy day with a high standard and turnout of horses and ponies before them. Course Builder Tricia Fearn from Ayrshire kept everyone on their toes by changing the order of jumps after each height change and put on a testing track for those wishing to qualify for the Working Hunter Championships at Blair Castle International Horse Trials in September. The course jumped well for most and provided plenty of variety with sheep troughs, gates, ladders, hay racks and large potted trees in interesting places.

Zoe McConnell and Rosedust April Love started a great day for the McConnell family, taking the red rosette in the Junior Starter Stakes as well as third in the Best Turned Out and Junior Pony Club Pony classes.

The Junior Beginner Working Hunter class was won by Joanne Wallace and George and the Seniors by Ruth McGarry and Lyric.

Zoe Wilson and Busker won the Junior Novice, having taken second in the Beginners, with Sheila McConnell and Diamond Annaghdown winning the Senior Novice, and going on to take the Reserve Working Hunter Champion and Reserve Supreme titles. Zoe and Busker also won the Senior Pony Club Pony show class.

Mollie Miller-Smith and El Divo won both the Junior Intermediate and Small Open classes - the only combination to win two working hunter classes. Sister Izzy and Emma-Lee took double blue coming second in the Junior Novice and Intermediate classes.

Senior Intermediate winners Nicola Morgan and Knightsbridge made the journey from Lockerbie worthwhile by taking the red rosette as well as second in The Courier / BHS Scotland Riding Club Working Hunter Series to qualify for Blair. Nicola and Knightsbridge then went on to take the Working Hunter and Supreme Championships.

Amy Hall and Miami Pandemonium came third in the Junior Small Open and went on to win the Junior Open in fine style.

As the jumps went up the clear rounds became scarce and in the first Blair qualifier Kara Torrance and Meara Lad won the biggest class of the day with the only clear round.

In the second Blair qualifier and final class of the day, held in the early evening, Kim Armstrong and Radihaza Bolero took the Stewarts Building Services / BHS Scotland Working Hunter qualifier.

In the Show classes, judge Liz Brownlie-McLaughlin selected Tammy Campbell and Senruf Gin Fizz as the best turned out junior as well as heading the line up in the Junior Pony Club Pony and taking the Reserve Show Champion title.

Caitlin McKie and Arran Bay won the best turned out senior class and came third in the Senior Novice Working Hunter class.

Olivia Clark and Carnival Dream travelled from North Ayrshire to win the Small Riding Club Horse class as well as second in the Best Turned out Junior and third in both the Junior Beginner and Novice Working Hunter classes.

Shirley Panter and VDL Cavalier won the Large Riding Club Horse class, going on to take the Show Champion title, as well as second in the Senior Intermediate and third in the 1m Blair qualifier working hunter classes.

Thanks go to all judges, stewards, course builder, competitors, helpers and spectators who helped to make this a very enjoyable day.
