Edusport Academy maintained their lead at the top of the South of Scotland League on Saturday when they comfortably beat reigning champions Wigtown and Bladnoch 4-0.

Crichton though kept up the pressure on Edu by travelling to Sanquhar and beating Nithsdale Wanderers 3-1. The home side took the lead early in the match but a Darren Johnstone hat-trick ensured the three points went to the Hospital Park side.

After Johnstone had equalised he put Crichton ahead just before the interval and scored his and his team’s third after the break. Creetown kept up their winning run by recording a 4-2 victory over Lochar Thistle with Matthew Deezly scoring a hat-trick to add to a single from Scott Philips.

Abbey Vale beat Fleet Star at Gatehouse also by three goals to one after the home side had went ahead after 14 minutes through Aaron Halliday that saw the sides go in at the interval with Star ahead.

However three second half goals saw Vale take the three points with goals form Chris Melon, Dillon Cairnie and Jack Connolly.

Mid-Annandale beat Heston Rovers at Palmerston Park by the same scoreline with Nathan Muir giving the Lockerbie side a slender half time lead. Darren Notman and Denver Milligan added a single each before Russell Jardine found a consolation goal for Heston before the finish of the match.

There was also a 3-1 result at Blairmount Park with Newton Stewart coming out on top against a much improved Dumfries YMCA.

Striker Robert Middleton put the Creesiders ahead after 24 minutes following a mixup in the YMCA defence which allowed him a free strike on goal against a defenceless keeper with Ryan Mckie doubling the scoreline nine minutes later to give the home side a two goal lead at the interval.

A second half own goal by Rob Davidson who failed to find his keeper with a pass back put Newton three goals ahead but a determined visiting team pulled back a well-deserved consolation goal a minute from time when Ryan Coats found the net. The match at Moffat between Upper Annandale and St Cuthbert Wanderers was postponed due to the pitch being water-logged.
