Council hosts civic reception for champion curlers

Stranaer Ice Rink curlers have brought home many medals from international competiton over the years, but the 2015-2016 season was excceptional with 13 curlers winning world, european and national titles.

The athletes were honoured by Dumfries and Galloway Council at a civic reception where they were all presented with gifts from both the Council and Stranraer Ice Rink, who hosted the event.

The following players were acknowledged:

World Champions - Christine Cannon, Wigtown Curling Club, World Senior Curling Champion; Gregor Cannon, Wigtown Curling Club, World Junior Curling Champion; Bobbie Lammie, Leswalt Curling Club, World Junior Curling Champion

National champions (Scotland) - Hamilton McMillan, Castle Kennedy Curling Club, Scottish Curling Champion; Vicki Adams, Portpatrick Curling Club, Scottish Curling Champion; Anna Sloan, Lockerbie, Scottish Curling Champion; Norman Brown, Stoneykirk Curling Club, Scottish Senior Champion; Hugh Aitken, Limekiln Loch Curling Club, Scottish Senior Champion; Naomi Brown, Stoneykirk Curling Club, Scottish Junior Champion

National champions (Ireland):

Peter Wilson, Limekiln Loch Curling Club, Irish Senior Champion and World Championship bronze medallist; Neil Fyfe, Leswalt Curling Club, World Championship bronze medallist and Irish Mixed Doubles Champions

Alison Fyfe, Leswalt Curling Club, Irish Mixed Doubles Champions

Andrew Gilmore and John Gilmore, Logan Curling Club, Irish mens champions and European C League bronze medallists.

Also recognised was Hugh Nibloe, selected for the Scottish wheelchair curling squad.

Wigtown Area Committee chairperson Marion McCutcheon presented the gifts to the World Champions on behalf of Dumfries and Galloway Council and John Ross, CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire presented gifts to the national champions. Also in attendance were Councillor Ted Thompson, Civic Head Dumfries and Galloway Council, Billy Howat, President of The Royal Caledonian Curling Club ; Brian Park, Past President and Honorary President Stranraer Ice Rink; John Ferguson, President of Stranraer Ice Rink Curling Club and Colin Dalrymple, Immedialte Past President SIRCC.
